Bobbie Dazzle, the catsuit-sporting queen of UK Glam Rock, releases her second album, ‘Star Power’, via Rise Above Records on October 2. The flamboyant singer, songwriter, flautist and producer arrived without warning in late 2024 with ‘Fandabidozi’, one of that year’s most irresistible introductory statements. Reviewers drooled and fans reacted with disbelieving joy when Bobbie and her band proceeded to take the songs from ‘Fandabidozi’ out on the road.
As awareness built steadily following the record’s release, to the surprise of everyone – including herself – she toured with Alice Cooper, Sweet, Lita Ford and Thunder’s Luke Morley, along with a spot at Hyde Park with Jeff Lynne’s ELO.
“I put my first record out at the end of 2024 and when those tours started to happen, I had to pinch myself,” Bobbie admits cheerfully. “I was on the road with a childhood hero like Alice Cooper, but I couldn’t process the reality of that at the time because behind the scenes I was doing everything myself – I didn’t have management, a booking agent or a tour manager. I’m a solo artist, not a band. I was one woman doing everything. So it was a lot.”
In less chaotic moments, Bobbie gathered moments in the company of those she shared stages with. Ozzy Osbourne had died on the first day of Cooper’s tour. “We spoke a lot about Ozzy,” she recalls. “Alice and Ozzy were the same age, they’d been friends since the 1970s, so he felt like he was losing a peer.”
When she played with Lita Ford at the Indigo at London’s O2 Arena, the former Runaways guitarist was equally generous with her time. So much so that Lita reappears a guest on ‘Star Power’, supplying a rip-snorting solo toward the end of its final track, ‘Feel It Too’.
“Lita and I spent some time in her dressing room, just me and her,” reveals Bobbie, whose real name is Siân Greenaway. “She was so welcoming and positive. Lita is such a really cool chick. And she is a girl’s girl. The last note on the album is her guitar ringing out, which I really like as well.”
In addition, Bobbie played a run of Christmas shows with Sweet, the iconic purveyors of such glam staples as ‘Block Buster!’, ‘Hell Raiser’ and ‘The Ballroom Blitz’. “There has been many different versions of Sweet, but Andy Scott was a part of all of those so he holds a really special place in my heart,” she says of the guitarist. “I wouldn’t have started being Bobbie if it wasn’t for Sweet.”
Elsewhere, the track ‘Snakes And Ladders’ was written by Bobbie in conjunction with Gareth McGrillen, one half of the band Pendulum. Yeah, you read that right. Pendulum – the hugely popular drum & bass outfit. McGrillen happened to discover Bobbie on a Spotify playlist and out of the blue surprised her by sending a song he’d written.
“Gareth plays bass on it, too,” she explains. “You’d never know it was a member of Pendulum, but when you do you can absolutely hear it within the track. It’s Pendulum meets 1974.”
An album of super-hummable tunes presented with infinite amounts of swagger and proficiency, ‘Star Power’ is set to take Bobbie Dazzle to the next level. Visually and sonically speaking, Bobbie now has an extraordinarily strong identity and the new album’s opening anthem, ‘Star Power’, continues right where track ten of ‘Fandabidozi’, ‘Flowers On Mars’, left off. There’s a very good reason for that: These eleven songs were overwhelmingly written by Bobbie and the band’s keyboard player Chris Dando, as well as being brought to life in the same studio as the debut.
“I’ve hidden what I like to call Easter Eggs within the album and I hope that super-fans will notice them,” she teases. “The melody at the start of the first song, ‘Star Power’, is a slightly transposed version of the final song of the first album. So they link together, but I also wanted the album to take the listener on a journey. It starts off familiar-sounding, but the second half has a little more grit to it – not necessarily in an angry way. What can I say? It has a few more teeth, but those teeth are smiling.”
She continues: “Once again, Chris Dando was a big part in all of this. With those stacked harmony vocals he helped me shape the Bobbie sound.”
Ash Baker, who played guitar on most of the songs, and bassist Leon Smith provide another vital element of Bobbie’s world. Both are members of her live band and assisted the production.
The intro to the song ‘Jack Rabbit’ offers definite echoes of Queen. Listen and you can hear ‘Seven Seas Of Rhye’. “I wondered whether people still have the attention spans for long intros anymore,” Bobbie muses, “but I always write what I want and not what people expect. So yeah, it is a little bit ‘Pinball Wizard’ [by The Who] and it’s also reminiscent of Queen. I just wanted to stick it in there, so I did.”
There is also plenty of flute-playing on the album. “I’m also a big prog rock fan, and there’s always going to be that influence in my music,” she smiles. “I’m a big Rush fan. I love the band Traffic. But the flute is great because it drops you into a whole different world.”
Sadly, the charismatic singer was forced to cancel some latter dates of the ‘Fandabidozi’ campaign when endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects one in nine women, left her temporarily wheelchair-bound.
“I had gone from from playing with my all-time favourite bands to suddenly not being able to walk, let alone play any shows,” she reveals. “I had to kind of accept the fact that I’m a disabled person, but I won’t be a victim of that. I found a way through this condition and now I’m an advocate for it.
“I want to be the disabled rock star, basically,” declares Bobbie proudly. “I want to be up on that stage and show women that there are going to be hard times, but you can push through them. Get the right help and you can do whatever you want.”
‘Star Power’ is an unashamed, glorious slab of new millennial glam rock, and given the perilous state of the world right now, doesn’t everyone need a bit of escapism in their lives?
“Many artists experience bad times and sing about personal experiences because they need to find a way through,” Bobbie explains. “I do the same thing, but in a really opposite way. I don’t make music because I want to be famous. I do it because there are things I have survived and my way through all of that is to create happy music. It’s escapism and it’s medicine for me. I welcome people into a world where they can just let go; they can dance, and they don’t have to reflect on the negative things in life. It can be playful and complex – and enjoyable. I’ve always wanted to bring the fun back to rock music.”
